A.B. Ewing
March 23, 1831 - September 23, 1903
Alexander Black (A.B.) Ewing was the only son of Armstrong and Elizabeth (Zimmerman) Ewing. He was born in Middletown, Dauphin County, PA on March 23, 1831. He came to Carlisle when he was eighteen and learned the trade of cabinetmaking and undertaking with Henry Fetter. In 1851, he married Miss Elizabeth Shrom. Together they had five children: four girls; Miss Florence V, Mrs. Samuel Gensler, Mrs. Grace Kieffer, Mrs. Herbert Bender and one boy; Hastings A. All five children resided in Carlisle. He began business for himself in 1853 on the same premises until his death. After the death of his daughter, Florence, he joined the St. Johns Episcopal Church. He was a prominent member of fraternal orders in Carlisle. A.B. was a member of St. Johns Lodge, No. 260, F. & A.M.; St. Johns Chapter, No. 171, St. Johns Commandery, No. 8. The I.O.O.F.; No. 91, of which he had been a member for 52 years, and a conductor of the lodge for 37 years. He was also a member of the I.O.R.M.; No. 108, and of the Union Fire Company in which he took great interest and was its President for four years. He was the next to the oldest Mason and the next oldest Odd Fellow in Carlisle. He was President of the Funeral Directors Association in the Southern District of Pennsylvania. The title of Colonel was conferred to A.B. by unanimous consent of the community. It happened when the Confederate forces came to Carlisle and the U.S. troops stationed at the garrison fled to Harrisburg. Since he was the Post undertaker, he was left in sole command. A. B. died September 23, 1903. His death caused a great sense of sadness and a loss to a very wide circle in Carlisle. His funeral was held from his residence at No. 159 West High Street, Carlisle. A.B. is buried in Ashland Cemetery.
Hastings A. Ewing
January 14, 1866 - June 14, 1924
Hastings A. Ewing was born in Carlisle on January 14, 1866. He graduated from the public schools of Carlisle in 1883. Hastings learned the trade of cabinetmaking from his father A.B. and served an apprenticeship under him. Under the careful guidance of his father, he began his business career. Both Hastings and A.B. took great pride in the high class of their work. In 1893, while attending and directing a funeral, A.B. met with an accident which practically ended his personal supervision of his business. His son, Hastings, stepped quietly and modestly into his place, and afterward practically conducted the entire establishment, which he continued to carry on after his father's death. On December 6, 1888, Hastings married Effie DeLancey. Together they had four children: Alexander B., one that died in infancy in 1892, Mary E., and William Joseph. Both Hastings and his wife were members of the St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Lodge No. 91, I.O.O.F., of which he is past grand; the K.G.E., No. 110, in which he was the past chief; the Mystic Circle and to Tent No. 403, K.O.T.M., Carlisle. He was also a member of the Union Fire Co. of Carlisle and the Southern District Funeral Directors' Association. He was very popular socially in the community of Carlisle. Hastings died June 14, 1924. He is buried in Ashland Cemetery.
William J. and Jessie M. Ewing
September 28, 1898 - March 14, 1934
December 18, 1892 - January 31, 1988
William J. Ewing was born September 28, 1898, in Carlisle, and was a son of Hastings A. and Effie DeLancey Ewing. Bill was a 1917 graduate of Carlisle High School and a 1919 graduate of Eckel's College of Embalming in Philadelphia. In 1920, he received his license to practice the art of undertaking from the Pennsylvania State Board of Undertakers and immediately became associated with his father as a third generation undertaker in Carlisle. After several years with his father, Bill also became associated with a leading funeral home in Cape May, New Jersey.
In 1922, Bill married Jessie Pearl Morrison. Jessie was born December 18, 1892, in Kennedy's Valley, Perry County and was a daughter of Geary and Minnie Morrison.
In 1924, after the death of his father, Bill relocated the Ewing Funeral Home and his home to 148 South Hanover St., Carlisle. During the next few years as Carlisle and the surrounding communities continued to grow so did the number of families served by the Ewing Funeral Home. On September 3, 1926, Bill and Jessie celebrated the birth of their twin boys, William M. Ewing and Seymour A. Ewing.
On March 14, 1934, tragedy struck the Ewing family as William Joseph Ewing died at his home at the age of 35. He had contracted septicemia during the course of his work less than one month prior to his death. William J. Ewing was buried March 17, 1934 in Ashland Cemetery.
============================================================================================
Faced with the sudden death of her husband, Jessie became one of the first women in Pennsylvania to obtain a "Widow's License" to permit the continuance of the family funeral home. Jessie faced many challenges, she was a widowed mother of twin seven year old boys, harsh economic times where upon the United States and she was now responsible for day-to-day operations of a large funeral establishment. Other significant challenges were being a woman in a male dominated profession and the ever increasing competitive nature among funeral homes. The number of families served by the Ewing Funeral Home went from over one hundred per year to less than twenty-five, five years after the death of her husband.
Jessie succeeded in keeping the Ewing Funeral Home operating and in 1950, her twin sons assumed the day-to-day responsibilities and the number of families served was increasing. Jessie continued assisting her sons even after William and Seymour relocated to the present site at 630 South Hanover Street, in 1960.
Jessie Pearl Morrison Ewing, died January 31, 1988 in the Forest Park Health Center, Carlisle at the age of 95. Jessie was a widow for more than fifty years. Her funeral was held February 4, 1988 from St. John's Episcopal Church, Carlisle, and she was laid to rest next to her husband in Ashland Cemetery.

Please accept my most sincere condolences on the passing of your husband, father, and brother. He was a very special and honorable man who will be missed by anyone who knew him. I was a waitress at the Farmers Market Restaurant through high school and college (1993-1999). I have always remembered Seymour and Bill fondly over the years. I was able to speak to Seymour and Bill at my father's funeral, which they directed in 2004. I'm not quite sure if Seymour remembered me, but I never forgot him or Bill. Seymour was always very interested in my school work and my plans after graduation. I always enjoyed our playful conversations and loved the moments when the restaurant wasn't busy and I could lean up in the corner of the front counter and chat at length. Back then he was eating a "heartier" breakfast, including home fries and bacon, in his words, "Cremate them both!" He would always answer the questions I had about his business and I always appreciated his honesty and willingness to satisfy my curiosity. I enjoyed the rare moments when Seymour and Bill came in together, they seemed to still enjoy fooling the other customers into trying to guess who was who. I learned early on, when in doubt, look at the wedding band- Silver for Seymour. I gave birth to twins in November and couldn't help but think of them and what a kick they would get out of that. Again, please accept my condolences. He was liked and admired by so many. I will miss him.
