Obituary

Yi Suk Thompson, 78, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at UPMC Carlisle Hospital surrounded by family and loved ones. She was born on February 15, 1947, in Yangnim-dong, South Korea, and was a daughter of the late Dong Un and Nan Sim Song.

Yi Suk grew up during the Korean War and lost her mother at a young age. While enduring these hardships, she developed close bonds with her brothers and sisters and she continued to remain a devoted sister to her siblings throughout her life. She was a high school graduate with a passionate interest in music. Yi Suk met her future husband, William Thompson, while in Korea and then immigrated to the United States becoming a naturalized American citizen on March 31, 1977. Yi Suk was a dedicated, loving wife and mother who was steadfast in her enthusiastic encouragement and support. She became fiercely independent while adjusting to life in her new country (as William often had to work on offshore oil rigs for multiple days to weeks at a time). During this time, she balanced her primary concern of raising her son, Keith, with being a church deacon and a Sunday school volunteer while learning how to drive stick shift on her Volkswagen Beetle. After this initial adjustment, a new challenge was thrown her way as the family moved to the Middle East (Dubai) and a new set of obstacles ensued with Yi Suk once again adjusting to life in a vastly different country. However, just like before, these obstacles were soon overcome. While in Dubai, she became a world traveler with journeys to exotic locales including India, Nepal, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Kenya, and Egypt. Her family

eventually settled back in the United States where she cheerfully embraced a life of frequent local adventures including fishing trips and exploring new towns while supporting her husband on his road races and triathlons. Yi Suk was a faithful and devout Christian who attended

Carlisle United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a frequent soloist at her previous churches and was praised for her beautiful and surprisingly powerful voice.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William W. Thompson, one son, Keith (wife Adriana) Thompson of San Diego, CA, two brothers, Bong Il Song of New York and Seung Il Song of Texas, two granddaughters, Ariana Thompson and Isbella Thompson, and several

nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Jung Il Song, and one sister, Il Soon Song.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Carlisle United Methodist Church, 333 South Spring Garden Street, Carlisle, with Rev. Quinton DeBeer and Rev. Paul Herring officiating. The burial will be held at a later date, in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carlisle United Methodist Church. www.EwingBrothers.com.
