Obituary

Walter Freed "Whitey" Chronister, 92, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at ManorCare, Carlisle.  He was born on December 28, 1926 in New Oxford and was a son of the late Curtis Edward Chronister and Cora Alice (Freed) Chronister.  He was married to the late Lois Martha (Shumberger) Chronister who passed away on November 17, 2006.

Walter was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII and earned several medals for his honorable service.  Whitey was a retired painter with the Painters and Allied Trades Local Unions 252 & 411 in Harrisburg.  He also had worked with the PA Railroad.  Whitey was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Churchtown.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, animals, NASCAR, horse racing, going to the casino and playing cards.

He is survived by three daughters; Nancy Poeschl of Mechanicsburg, Karen Spencer and Jane Holmes both of Carlisle, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  Whitey was predeceased by 5 brothers; C. William, John C., Chester E., Frederick C. and Curtis W. Chronister and 4 sisters; Helen A. Chronister, Dorothy M. Weaver, Ethel M. Altland and Nadine C. Simpson.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2019 in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle with Pastor Debbie Brumbaugh officiating.  Burial with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.  A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org .  To send condolences visit www.Since1853.com.
