Viola M. Shumaker, 89, of Newville, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Green Ridge Village, Newville. She was born on March 26, 1927 in Carlisle, and was a daughter of the late Harvey S. and Ethel J. (Newcomer) Walker and was the widow of Charles E. "Pete" Shumaker, who died May 21, 2007.

Viola was a 1945 graduate of Carlisle High School. She retired after more than 20 years of service as the receptionist with the former Dr. Kent Rentschler Dental Office in Carlisle. Viola was a member of the Centerville Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newville.

She is survived by three sons; Stephen E. (and his wife, Mary) Shumaker, Dwight S. (and his wife, Kimberly) Shumaker and Edward L. Shumaker, all of Newville, one brother, Lester "Tom" Walker of Newville, five grandchildren; William and Tim Shumaker, Angela Pletcher, Keli Bouman and Morgan Shumaker, four great-grandchildren; Laken and Lucy Pletcher, Rylea Bouman and Trevor Bouman and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers; Sylvester "Pete" Walker and Harold Walker.

A viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2016 followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St, Carlisle, with Rev. Jerri Morton Carlin officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. www.Since1853.com.
