Obituary

Verna Mae (Hoffman) Shultz, 94, of Carlisle, died Monday, February 27, 2012, in the Chapel Pointe Health Center, Carlisle. She was born March 11, 1917, in Gardners, a daughter of the late Ira Edgar Hoffman and Cora E. (Fissel) Hoffman and the widow of Dr. Guy L. Shultz, who died Feb. 23, 2003.

Verna graduated from Biglerville High School in 1935 and Carlisle Commercial College one year later. She was the office manager for the veterinary practice of her late husband from 1950 until his retirement in 1980, in Carlisle. She then went on to hold various clerical positions with the Cumberland County Office of Aging until 1993. Mrs. Shultz was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Carlisle, the state and local chapters of AARP, Farm Women Group No. 9, Old Bellaire Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Women's Auxiliary of the Carlisle Fish & Game Assoc. and the Women's Auxiliary of the PA Veterinary Medical Assoc. She was also a member at large of Yellow Breeches Chapter of ABWA and a life member of the YWCA, the Carlisle Hospital Auxiliary and the Biglerville Historical Association.

She is survived by two daughters; Nancy S. Miller of Carlisle and Judy S. Hunt of Naples, FL, two grandsons; Matthew (and his wife, Amy) Miller of Boiling Springs and Justin Miller of Carlisle, one granddaughter, Elizabeth Hunt of Wilmington, DE, one great-granddaughter, Lauren Miller of Boiling Springs and several nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by four brothers.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Her ashes will be interred along with her late husband's in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Monroe Twp. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to The Benevolent Fund at Chapel Pointe, 770 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
