Vada Mary Miller Barrick, 95, formerly of Lonesome Road, Newville, bid farewell to this world on Sunday morning, May 19, 2024, in the Shippensburg Rehabilitation and Health Care Center where she had resided for the past several years. She was born June 15, 1928, to the late Albert Clair and Mary Elizabeth (Brandt) Miller. Vada was married to Gerald Lee Barrick for fifty-one years, until his death on August 28, 2000.
Vada was the last survivor of the seven children in her family. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Fred A. Miller, Martha (Miller) Warner, Dorothy (Miller) Hoover, Phyllis (Miller) Lehman, Peggy (Miller) Chronister Smith, and John B. Miller.
Vada is survived by seven children: Betty (David) Evelhoch, Jerry (Maxine) Barrick, Robert (Lu Ann) Barrick, Lois (John) Cox, Doris (Darrell) Goodhart, John (Grace) Barrick, and Carl (Brenda) Barrick, thirteen grandchildren: Heather (Brian) Fickel, Matthew (Melisa) Barrick, Michelle (Dave) McBride, Heidi Evelhoch, Beth (Carlos) Carmona, Greg (Kate) Barrick, Megan (Kevin) Orris, Lindsey (Jason) Stoneroad, Becky (Greg Myers) Barrick, Mindy (Mike Govea) Goodhart, Andrew (Jessica) Barrick, Lisa (Leroy) Grimes, and Jill (Caleb) Grove and twenty-four great-grandchildren: Matthew Barrick, Rebecca (Donavan) Howell, Abby Barrick, Hope Carmona, Aubrey McBride, Benjamin Fickel, Madison Barrick, Ava McBride, Hannah Orris, Alyvia McBride, Dakota Carmona, Levi Barrick, Sarah Barrick, Emma Orris, Logan Barrick, Lucas Barrick, Liam Barrick, Sadie Grimes, Anna Grove, Eli Barrick, Lena Grove, Micah Barrick, Beckett Stoneroad, Avery Grimes. Vada is also survived by many nieces and nephews, a brother-in-law, Donald Lehman, and a sister-in-law Ruth R. Barrick.
Vada was well known for her love of her family and of Jesus and had a sharp memory for recalling everyone's birthday and sending cards and calling to recognize their special days. She grew many fruits and vegetables, especially blueberries and strawberries, and her thousands of bright daffodils every spring. When her children matured and left home, she started raising bunnies and did so for many years. Although she never really liked working inside the house, she was a good cook and often tried new recipes from her hundreds of cookbooks from nearly every state. Favorites in the family included homemade noodles, Mrs. Henry's cake, decorated roll-out sugar cookies, monkey bread, and many more delectable creations. Creating braided homemade rag rugs was a winter activity when she could not be outside in her gardens.
She will be greatly missed by her extended family and by many neighbors and friends. "She lived small, but loved beyond big. Her spirit and tenacity were something to be admired. While her passing leaves a void in the hearts of our large family, all of our lives are infinitely better because of her and Gerald."
Vada was a member of McClure's Gap Church of God, 130 Church of God Road, Newville, PA and a former member of the St. Mary's UMC in Bloserville.
A funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle with Corey L.
