Truman Madden Sminkey, age 96, formerly of New Cumberland, passed away on May 5, 2010, at Chapel Pointe Health Center in Carlisle. He was born on December 30, 1913, in Shamokin, and was a son of the late James Wilson Sminkey and Selina (Madden) Sminkey, and was widowed from Evelyn Galbraith Sminkey, who died in 1996. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James W. Sminkey.
Truman was a retired general insurance agent, a veteran of World War II and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from the Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps as Camp Commander at Chestertown and Powellville, MD.
Truman was a Life Member of the Retired Officers Association and the Reserve Officers Association, the Navy Officers Club and the Navy Golf Club, the National Association of the C. C. C. and the Susquehanna Valley Chapter 103 of the C. C. C. Alumni.
He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Jane (Sallie) Hoffman and her husband, Richard Platt of Camp Hill, three grandchildren; David Mowrey and wife, Laura of Harrisburg, William Mowrey and wife, Linda of New Cumberland and Katherine Hoffman of Scranton and two great-grandchildren; Benjamin and Kyle Mowrey of New Cumberland.
Private graveside services with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be held at Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisburg Humane Society, 7790 Grayson Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17111.
