Thomas Gregory "Greg" Thorson, 62, of Carlisle, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at UPMC Harrisburg. He was born on March 4, 1964, in Carlisle, and was a son of the late Thomas E. Thorson and Julie Ann (Group) Kough.

Greg, affectionately known to many as "Thor," was a loving husband, a devoted father, a loyal friend, and the absolute best "Pappy Thor" anyone could imagine. A man whose presence could light up any room, Greg leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and an unbreakable family bond.

A proud 1982 graduate of Carlisle High School, Greg was a talented multi-sport athlete. Following high school, he served his country as a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Air Force. Though his time in the service was relatively brief, the experience deeply shaped him and imparted lessons he carried throughout his life. A true handyman, there was nothing Greg couldn't fix. He built a successful career in the trade, proudly passing his skills and strong work ethic down to his children.

Greg’s athletic background evolved into a lifelong passion for mentoring youth. As "Coach Thorson," he poured his heart into coaching CAMF Football and C.A.L.L. Baseball. He became a community legend, inspiring a generation of young athletes who now pass his gift for the game on to others. The ball field was truly his second home. Whether it was a local travel game or a tournament states away, Greg was his family’s biggest cheerleader. Rain or shine, you could always count on him to show up.

Beyond the field, Greg embraced life to the fullest. He was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1299, where he loved playing in the pool league alongside his sons. He felt most at home in nature and surrounded by loved ones—whether he was making memories during the annual family hunting trip at the cabin, teaching his grandchildren to fish, or pitching horseshoes by the creek at the campsite.

Music filled his soul, and his love for classic rock will live on in all who knew him. He had no shame in tearing up the dance floor and was often the life of the party, known for a laugh that brought genuine joy to those around him. A die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan through and through, he proudly passed his love for Sunday football down to his children. Family traditions were everything to Greg, especially the annual beach trip. Those who knew him best will forever cherish the image of him sitting at the seafood buffet for hours, cracking crab legs and telling jokes.

The passion and love Greg invested in every aspect of his life forged a family unit that will remain firmly glued together in his absence. He leaves behind a beautiful family who will forever carry his spirit forward. Greg is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Cherlene "Cheryl" J. (Chestnut) Thorson, who was his true partner in life; his beloved daughter, Tosha Thorson and her fiancé Timmy Owens of Carlisle; and his three strong sons, Benjamin Thorson of Carlisle, Zebylin Thorson and his wife Caitlin of Mechanicsburg, and Jedadiah Thorson and his fiancé Alexis Peck of Carlisle.

He was the incredibly proud and adoring "Pappy Thor" to his ten grandchildren, who were the absolute light of his life: Avah, Amari, Dallas, Timmy Jr. "Deuce", Koah, Thomas "Jagger", Chandler, Brecken, Maliyah, and Aimsley. He is also survived by his step-father, Robert Kough Jr.; four brothers, Van, Robert, and John Thorson all of Carlisle, and Steve Kough of Penn Township; two sisters, Amanda Thorson of Carlisle and Teri Thorson-Berry of Louisiana; as well as many deeply adored nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Greg is now beautifully reunited in peace with his brothers, Richard and Jimmy Thorson.

Above all else, if there is one thing Greg would want you to remember about him, it is simply this: he loved all of you.

To honor and celebrate Greg’s vibrant life, a viewing will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026, followed immediately by a heartfelt funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St. Carlisle. Pastor Gary Stackfield Jr., one of the many youth players proudly coached by Greg, will officiate the service. Burial will be private. Details for a repast to celebrate Greg's remarkable life will be announced following the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Greg’s honor may be made to https://gofund.me/24362970d  www.EwingBrothers.com.
