Obituary

Susan Girvin McDermott, 71, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at her home. She was born on Wednesday, February 8, 1939, in Chevy Chase, Md, a daughter of the late William H. and Bonnie (Smith) Girvin and the widow of Lt. Col. (Ret) Arthur T. McDermott, USMC, who died Aug. 28, 2006.

Susan earned a bachelor's degree from the Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va, and then earned a second bachelor's degree ineducation from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Susan worked as a real estate agent for more than 20 years with Jack Gaughen Realtor. She was also a substitute biology teacher with the Carlisle Area School District. Susan was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, the Daughters of American Revolution and the Carlisle Area Sertoma Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer A. Daley (and her husband, Dan) of York Springs, two sons; Richard G. Newman and Christian H. Newman (and his wife, Kimberly), both of Carlisle, a brother, William Girvin of Lincolnton, NC, two grandchildren; William Newman and Grace Daley, two nephews and one niece.

Services to celebrate Susan's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, 2A N. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Jon A. Black officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1 p.m. until time of services and immediately following the services for a time of fellowship at the church. Burial will be at a later date in the Meeting House Springs Cemetery, Carlisle. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contribution be made to Carlisle Area Sertoma Club, c/o Doug Gale, 1068 Harrisburg Pike, Carlisle, PA 17013.
