Susan Girvin McDermott, 71, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at her home. She was born on Wednesday, February 8, 1939, in Chevy Chase, Md, a daughter of the late William H. and Bonnie (Smith) Girvin and the widow of Lt. Col. (Ret) Arthur T. McDermott, USMC, who died Aug. 28, 2006.

Susan earned a bachelor's degree from the Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va, and then earned a second bachelor's degree ineducation from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Susan worked as a real estate agent for more than 20 years with Jack Gaughen Realtor. She was also a substitute biology teacher with the Carlisle Area School District. Susan was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, the Daughters of American Revolution and the Carlisle Area Sertoma Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer A. Daley (and her husband, Dan) of York Springs, two sons; Richard G. Newman and Christian H. Newman (and his wife, Kimberly), both of Carlisle, a brother, William Girvin of Lincolnton, NC, two grandchildren; William Newman and Grace Daley, two nephews and one niece.

Services to celebrate Susan's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, 2A N. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Jon A. Black officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1 p.m. until time of services and immediately following the services for a time of fellowship at the church. Burial will be at a later date in the Meeting House Springs Cemetery, Carlisle. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements.
