Obituary

SSG (Ret) Roosevelt L. Wilson, US Army, 87, of Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at the West Shore Hospital, Mechanicsburg. He was born on Nov. 10, 1928 in Kenbridge, VA and was a son of the late Henry P. and Daisy M. (Ingram) Wilson.

Roosevelt was a US Air Force veteran of the Korean War and retired from the US Army in 1967 as Staff Sergeant. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and earned numerous awards for his more than 20 years of military service. After his military retirement, Roosevelt became a police officer with the Borough of Carlisle and retired again with 25 years of service and with the rank of Sergeant. He also worked for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department for 10 years. He attended church services at the Carlisle Barracks Post Chapel. Roosevelt was a member of the Carlisle Lions Club and Haines-Stackfield American Legion Post, Carlisle.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Evelyn L. (Edmonds) Wilson, two sons; James (wife,Yanna) Wilson and Roger Wilson, both of Carlisle, six grandchildren; Devon (husband, Carlos) Torres, Cortney (husband, David) Woolslayer, James R. (wife, Amanda) Wilson, Patrick A. Wilson, Jamel Wilson and Dewayne Bailey, four great-grandchildren; Truman, Jason, Margaux and London. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law; Martha (husband, Larry) Thomas and Mattie (husband, Robert) Etheredge and many nieces and nephews, including Timothy Scott of Carlisle. Roosevelt was predeceased by one son, Michael Anthony Wilson, who died July 25, 2014 and six brothers and three sisters.

A viewing will begin at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St, Carlisle, with Rev. Daniel B. Keys officiating. Burial with military honors by Cumberland Valley Honor Guard will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Memorial gifts in Roosevelt's name may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
