Obituary

Shirley D. Young, 75, of Carlisle, went home to her Heavenly Father on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at her house surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 29, 1949, in Carlisle and was a daughter of the late Paul H. Shughart and Evelyn (Garman) Shughart.

She graduated from Carlisle High School in 1968. After high school she attended The Beauty Academy of Lemoyne, graduating in 1969. Shirley then spent 18 years working as a beautician at various salons around the Carlisle area. She also worked in the food service industry for several years with Wentzel's Food Service, A1 Vending Co., and the Carlisle Area School District kitchens. Her most enjoyable job was being a stay at home Grandma for her three grandsons until they went off to school. She also loved working in her vegetable garden and many flower beds, not to mention her love of cooking and baking delicious main dishes and desserts for over 50 years. Her family relied on her sewing abilities, and she enjoyed sewing for them. She loved camping and attending gospel music concerts. She was a member of Salem Stone United Church of Christ for many years and was currently a member of Bethany Evangelical Church in Carlisle.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, George L. Young, two daughters, Wendy M. (Marshall) Holtry and Bridget A. (Charles) Minich both of Carlisle, two granddaughters, Amber Shaffer of Danville and Samantha Holtry of Carlisle, three grandsons, Bradley (Morgan) Minich of Marysville, Andrew (Fiancé Samantha Harding) Minich of Carlisle, and Matthew Minich of Carlisle, one great granddaughter Kennedy Minich, two sisters, Kathryn M. Huntzinger of Carlisle and Paula J. Fletcher of California. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by one sister Arlene R. Jennings.

A Memorial service will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024, in the Bethany Evangelical Church at 558 Petersburg Rd., Carlisle with Pastors Daniel Pratt and Amy Moreno officiating.
