Ronald Ray Thumma (age 83) of Carlisle passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Chapel Pointe. He was born on August 11, 1942, in Carlisle to the late Mervin “Ike” and Ruth (Mackey) Thumma.
Ron grew up on a farm in South Middleton Twp where he learned his strong work ethic. He went to Boiling Springs High School and graduated with the class of 1960. After school he went to work at CH Masland earning money to build a home and raise his family. He later worked at Ralston Purina as a forklift operator. After Purina closed, he established his own landscaping business. Dad loved being outside and working with his hands. He landscaped with such precision and put his whole heart into every detail; whether he was mowing the lawn, trimming the shrubs, planting a new landscape, or sowing grass seed. After more than a decade he closed the landscape business and joined John Gleim Excavating as a dump truck driver. Ron could not give up his joy of lawn care, and he later worked for Lykens Valley Golf Course manicuring their greens and fairway. He officially retired in 2023. Ron attended church at The Meeting House Church and especially enjoyed his Sunday morning coffee and doughnut fellowship. He was a member of the Eagles, The Carlisle Club, and the Moose Lodge. A favorite pastime for many years, Ron participated in local bowling leagues and travel tournaments. He was great at making strikes and talented to pick-up those spares. He valued his GMC pick-up truck and always kept it spotless. Dad adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. When visiting the great-grandchildren he would give them a sweet treat, desiring for them to remember their Pappy in the years to come as they grew up. Dad’s family was his most priceless treasure and the greatest joy of his life!!! Most of all, he loved to eat good food, especially home cooking at family gatherings, and breakfast at local restaurants. Dad will be greatly missed by his family and friends!!
He is survived by his daughter Javette Thumma, two sons, David R. (his wife Kathy) Thumma, and Todd L. Thumma (his lifetime mate Beth), two granddaughters, Natasha Thumma and Ashley (her husband Mitch) Collins, two grandsons, Josh (his wife Caitlin) Thumma and Tyler (his fiancé Alyssa) Thumma, three great granddaughters, Isabel Milletics, Layla Thumma, Abigail Collins, three great grandsons, Noah Collins, Zephyr Milletics, and Isaac Collins, one sister Nancy (her husband Raymond) Ewanek, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will begin on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 11:00 am at The Meeting House Church, 1155 Walnut Bottom Rd., Carlisle, with Pastor Bob Beaty officiating. The burial will follow at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will take place at The Meeting House on Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ron’s name to The Meeting House Church.
