Roger Ellis Wiles, 75, of Carlisle, passed away at Harrisburg Hospital, on Thursday, April 4th. He was the husband of JoAnne ( Stephenson) Wiles for more than 24 years. Born on May 13, 1948, in Newville, he was the son of Ruben and Hazel ( Stockslager) Wiles.
Roger was in the Cumberland Valley High School class of 1966 and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who loved hunting, watching his son coach high school football games, and sprint car racing. He retired from ABF Trucking and had previously worked at Sunderland Chevrolet and at Rite Aid as a mechanic. In his retirement, he continued to work part-time at Harrisburg Auto Auction. Roger enjoyed everything about cars and often spent time working in his garage.
Roger is predeceased by his sisters, Faye (Wiles) Peachey and Ruby (Wiles) Powell, and by an infant brother, Robert Wiles.
In addition to his wife, Roger is survived by his son, Steve Wiles (Molly) and his daughter, Wendy Howard ( Rob), two stepsons, Zackeree Grant ( Stephanie) and Ricky Grant ( Rose Mary). He is also survived by two sisters, Jacqueline Whisler and Joan Shoemaker and three brothers, Ivan, Elwood, and Dennis Wiles. Roger was the proud " Pappy" to seven grandchildren, Derek( Stephanie), Sarah (Jeremy), Karley ( Drew), Jake, AJ, Ethan, and Jon, one step granddaughter, Maddie, and two great grandchildren, Ben and Leila.
A celebration of Roger's life will be held on Thursday, April 11th at Great Hope Baptist Church, 110 Fern Ave, Carlisle, PA, with Pastor Joel Barrick officiating. A viewing will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the church followed by a funeral service at 5:00 p.m. A reception will be held immediately after to share memories of Roger. The burial with military honors will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Roger's name may be sent to Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund at vvmf.org.
