Obituary

Norman R. Smith, 73, of Newville, died Sunday, August 28, 2011, at his home with family by his side. He was born on Saturday, December 4, 1937, in Mechanicsburg, and was a son of the late Norman W. and Mary E. (Lehman) Smith.

Norman retired after 43 years of service with Carlisle Syntec. After retiring, he was employed part-time in the deli at Nell's Shurfine Markets. He was a member of McClure's Gap Church of God, a life member of the Upper Frankford Twp. Fire Co., where served as Captain of the Fire Police for 25 years. Norm enjoyed fishing, building birdhouses, steam engines and having lunch with his friends at the Saylor's Food Market in Newville.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 51 years, M. Louise (Thumma) Smith, two daughters; Tammy (and her husband, Loyan) Barrick of Newville and Susan (and her husband, Todd) Wert of Carlisle, two brothers; Ron Smith of Shippensburg and Ernie Smith of New Jersey, five sisters; Pat Palmer, Sandy Weaver and Esther Adams, all of Carlisle, Joyce Hock of Idaville and Doris Hostetter of Newville, three grandchildren; Cody Barrick, Adam Wert and Emily Wert and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Walters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2011, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Robert Stauffer officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Viewing will be held on Thursday from 1 p.m. until time of the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McClure's Gap Church of God Building Fund, 130 Church of God Rd., Newville, PA 17241.
