Obituary

Mely Igay McGugin, 59, of Carlisle, PA passed away on June 26, 2024 after fighting a rare form of cancer for 20 years.  She was born to Eugenio and Flora Igay in Catbalogan, Samar, Philippines. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 25 and has called Carlisle home ever since.

She is survived by her husband, Patrick J. McGugin Jr. of Carlisle, PA; her daughter Mary Heisey and son-in-law Gabriel Pelly of Charlotte, NC; her daughter Melissa Igay and her three children of Fort Wayne, IN; her siblings Zacarias Egay and Pelagia Soriao in the Philippines; her brothers-in-law Robert McGugin of Carlisle and Edward McGugin of Aberdeen, MD; many nieces and nephews; and even more great nieces and nephews. She was blessed with a strong community of friends who were like family to her.  She reunites with those who passed before her, including her parents and siblings Arcenia, Semion, and Eugenio Jr.

Mely worked for Ross Distribution Center as a merchandise processor for 20 years.  She supported generations of family members in the Philippines, including by putting many nieces and nephews through school.  She loved food and cooking, and she made the best lumpia (arguable only to those who never tried hers).  She was a member of Saint Patrick's Church since the 1980's.  Mely participated in multiple clinical trials at the National Institute of Health. One of the ways her legacy lives on is through her contributions to the research of rare cancers.

Join us for Mely's memorial service on Friday, July 19th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 87 Marsh Dr, Carlisle, PA 17015.  There will be a reception to follow.  www.EwingBrothers.com.
