Obituary

Max W. Griffie, 88, of Carlisle and formerly of Enola Rd., Newville, passed away Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Thornwald Home, Carlisle. He was born on Sunday, June 11, 1922, in Bloserville, a son of the late Mervin H. and Clara (Weller) Griffie. He was married for 62 years to the late Mary Jane (Nickel) Griffie, who died May 29, 2006.

Max graduated in 1940 from the former Newville High School. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the Army Air Force during WWII. Max retired after 32 years of service with the Defense Supply Agency-Defense Depot in Mechanicsburg, where he was a warehouse supervisor. He was a member of St. Mary's United Methodist Church in Bloserville, where he taught young peoples' Sunday school class for many years. Max was also a beekeeper for many years and turned his hobby into a small part-time business. He was a member of the PA Beekeepers Assoc. for 50 years. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed woodworking and being in the great outdoors of Pennsylvania.

He is survived by one son, James M. Griffie (and wife, Carol) and two daughters; Linda K. Frantz (and husband, David) and Laurie A. Holtry (and husband, John), all of Newville, a sister, Jean Kurtz (and husband, Kenneth) of Carlisle, three grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, twelve step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Max was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Griffie.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at St. Mary's United Methodist Church, 4133 Enola Rd., Newville, with Rev. Lisa K. Klinger officiating. Burial will be in the Bloserville Cemetery with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard. Viewing will held Friday from 6 - 8:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in Max's name to St. Mary's United Methodist Church.
