He was a US Navy veteran of WWII. Max received his G.E.D. from Carlisle High School in 1979. He retired from the Carlisle Barracks after more than 30 years of service, where he was a property book officer. Max was a member of the United States and PA L.S.T. Associations, the Tin Can Sailors, Carlisle Eagles Aerie 1299 and the Carlisle Lions Club.

Max is survived by four daughters; Sharon S. Napolitan of Shippensburg, Caryl L. Brenneman and Debra A. White, both of Carlisle and Brenda K. Wieland of Elliottsburg, two brothers; Ray Keefer of Wears Valley, TN and Joseph Keefer of Jacksonville, FL, 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
