Matthew William Good, of Fairbanks, Alaska and formerly of Boiling Springs, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 26, 2023, of sudden cardiac arrest. He was born in Carlisle, PA and was from Boiling Springs, PA. He is survived by his loving wife of seventeen years Rebecca (Hawbaker) Good, a daughter McKenzie Good, and two sons, Cael and Maddox Good. He absolutely loved his wife and children with all his heart. Family meant everything to him. He is the son of the late William (Bill) Good who passed away February 8, 2023, from a rare Cholangiocarcinoma (Bile Duct cancer) in addition to having heart disease and diabetes. Matthew is survived by his mother, Lois M. (Watson) Good from Boiling Springs, PA. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Elizabeth (Good) Alves, her husband, Russell and two nephews Andrew and Ethan Alves from Carlisle, PA.
Matthew also is survived by maternal aunts Laura L. (Watson) Myers of Mechanicsburg, PA and Linda (Stover) Watson of Shippensburg, PA., a cousin Erin (Watson) Young and her husband, Mark, and nieces Ava and Sydney of Carlisle, PA, a maternal uncle, Fredrick F. (Fred/Anthony) Watson of Dillsburg, PA, a foster sister, Mary (Fitting) Dever, her husband, Greg, and their four children, nieces Sarah, Hannah and Keziah Dever of Lemoyne, PA and a nephew, Joshua Dever of Carlisle, PA, a paternal cousin, Sharon Lee (Moses) Henry and her husband Harold (Dutch) Henry, Jr. of Holtwood, PA, a paternal aunt, Sandy (Good) Freeman of London, Ontario, Canada, a paternal uncle, John A. Good of Lancaster, PA. Matthew is survived by great aunts, great uncles, and cousins (Watson) of Tyrone, PA. He is also survived by his parents extended family Mirjana Katic-Trkulja, her son Zoran Trkulja (deceased) of Englewood, FL and Lois Guistwhite of Venice, FL, all formerly of Steelton, PA.
Matthew is survived by his mother-in-law, Josee McCaffery of Fairbanks, AK, and by his father-in-law, Dennis Hawbaker of Boiling Springs, PA. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws, Cory Hawbaker, his wife Lisa, and their children from Seattle, WA and Jason Hawbaker, his wife Beckie, nieces Hannah and Olivia and nephew Drew from Carlisle, PA.
He was predeceased in death by maternal grandparents, Paul and Lois Watson of Carlisle, PA, and a paternal grandmother, Miriam Good of Harrisburg, PA, and maternal uncles, Wayne W. Myers of Mechanicsburg, PA and Theodore P. (Ted) Watson of Shippensburg, PA.
Matt loved fishing, hunting, camping, and all outdoor activities with family and friends. Matthew always had a special place in his heart for his good friend and fishing buddy, the late Donald (Ike) Eichelberger from Boiling Springs, PA. Ike was like an honorary grandfather to him. As a child he was rambunctious, adventurous, and devilish at times with a great sense of humor, loved by all his friends, classmates, teachers, and the Boiling Springs Community. He played youth baseball for Mt Holly Springs and youth football and wrestling for Boiling Springs; winning many trophies and medals during his youth athletic career.
Matthew was a 1999 graduate of Boiling Springs High School where he excelled at wrestling and football. He was a member of the South Middleton Township Volunteer fire department and completed his senior class project interning at the firehouse. He began his high school varsity wrestling career as a ninth grade freshman, winning many matches, tournaments and Sectionals. In 1999, he won gold in Districts, and placed sixth at the PIAA PA State wrestling tournament in Hershey, PA and was a member of the 100 Wins Club. In 1998 he won a PA State title in Freestyle Wrestling which secured a place on the PA National Freestyle wrestling team and an invite to the US National Freestyle Wrestling event at the FargoDome in Fargo, North Dakota as a member of the PA State Wrestling Team.
Matt graduated from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in 2004 with a Bachelor's of Science in Education. He obtained his Master's of Education in Educational Leadership with a Principal certification from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2012.
Matthew worked as a science teacher and principal for the Kashunamiut School District in the village of Chevak, AK from 2005 to 2014. The Cupik people welcomed him, and he developed many friendships with students and community members. This was a special time in his life as he enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Alaskan Bush with local villagers. During this time, he started the first ever wrestling team for high school students in Chevak, and was awarded the ASAA Region I Coach of the Year 2007-2008 and the Great Alaska Conference Region I South Coach of the Year 2008-2009.
He worked at Australian Laboratory Services (ALS) in Fairbanks, AK from 2015 to 2018 first as a lab technician and quickly moved up to supervisor. He started working at Kinross-Fort Knox Gold Mine in Fairbanks, AK from 2018 until his time of death. He started in the Equipment Maintenance Supply department then was promoted as a Planner in the Maintenance Equipment Management (MEM) department. He was hard working, loved his job and co-workers, and really enjoyed being a valued and respected member of the Management Team. He received an employee recognition award during an employee appreciation banquet in December 2022. Matthew just celebrated his five-year work anniversary in July 2023 at Kinross-Fort Knox Gold Mine.
The family of Matthew Good welcome family and friends for a visitation on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 South Hanover St., Carlisle with Jimmy Kreiser as the officiant. The Good family encourages those attending to share a "good" memory of Matthew.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contribution checks be written to Lois Good for deposit into a trust account. The trust is currently being established by Matthew's family attorney in Alaska to benefit Maddox Good. He is Matthew's youngest son with Autism and will need lifetime care.
