Mary graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 1946 and from Dickinson College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts.
An avid reader and debater, Mary was an independent woman. She was committed to the pursuit of peace among all people, always pulling for the underdog. Her generosity and empathy had no bounds. Mary loved to knit, crochet and do needle work, passing on many treasured gifts to family and friends. Mary was a wonderful steward of the earth, never missing an opportunity to sow a seed in a garden or a mind.
Mary was a 50 year member of the League of Women Voters, serving two terms as president . She served as secretary for Carlisle Opportunity Homes for 33 years. Mary was a member of AAUW and "Carlisle Cares". She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years.
Mary displayed her affinity for all the people of the world by tutoring English to many Carlisle youths. She was an active participant in several book and poetry groups, never missing a chance to explore a new book.
Mary is survived by six siblings: John F. and his wife, Mary R. Peters of Gardners, William K. and his wife, Shelbia Q. Peters of Biglerville, Susan B. P. R. Wirths of Fredrick, MD, Earl H. Peters of Gardners, Virginia P. and her husband, Randolf H. Aires of Gardners and George M. and his wife, Mary Lou F. Peters of Portland, OR. Mary will be greatly missed by her 23 nieces and nephews and 46 grand nieces and nephews. Mary was much beloved by friends and family.
A memorial service will be held atAnita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium (ATS)on the campus of Dickinson College on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
