Marianne T. Essl, 89, of Carlisle, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community, Carlisle. She was born on December 5, 1933, in Chester, PA and was a daughter of the late Peter Opps and Theresa (Llaniczak) Opps.

Marianne graduated from Immaculata University in Chester County with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. She retired after many years of service as a schoolteacher and Principal for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg. Marianne was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carlisle.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years Lt. Col. (Ret) Edward A. Essl, Jr. USAF, two daughters, Gerianne T. Smitley of Bremerton, WA and Christiana M. (husband Rex) Melton of Del Mar, CA, and her grandchildren Jessica Zemaitis, Amanda Smitley, and Rebecca Haley, and her great granddaughter Peyton Zemaitis. She was preceded in death by one daughter Denise E. Haley (husband John) and one brother Rev. Francis Opps.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday May 9th in the St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle, with Rev. Kenneth Roth and Msg. John Jagodzinski (cousin). A private inurnment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
