Obituary

Major (Ret) Carl F. Snyder, US Army, 78, of Carlisle, stood his last muster and was assigned to the reserve battalion effective Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Carlisle Regional Medical Center. He was born on Monday, February 29, 1932, in Lineboro, Maryland, the son of the late Melvin F. and Ethel H. (Warehime) Snyder.

Major Snyder graduated from Manchester High School in Manchester, MD with the Class of 1949. He received a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the former Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD in 1953 and earned his Master's degree in Business Administration in 1973 from the University of Scranton.

He spent 20 years in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War and retired in 1973. Major Snyder had been stationed at Ft. Knox, KY, Ft. Benning, GA, Western Germany, Berlin, Korea, New York University, Thailand, Vietnam and Scranton, PA. While in Thailand, he and his wife, Nancy had the honor and privilege of meeting their Majesties on four separate occasions. Major Snyder was the recipient of many medals and honors for his service to our country.

After retirement from the Army, he was employed by the Commonwealth of PA for 19 years and retired in 1993. Carl was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Boiling Springs and was an associate member of Grace Lutheran Church, Camp Hill, where he was a former Council member and Chairman of the Stewardship Committee. Carl was avid Civil War buff, enjoyed model railroading, the Hershey Bears and soccer.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nearly 45 years, Nancy L. (Simons) Snyder, a son, Conrad F. Snyder (and his wife, Jill) of Catonsville, MD, twin granddaughters; Molly and Peyton Snyder, his mother-in-law, Doris Simons of Wyalusing and several cousins and other extended family members.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2nd & Walnut Streets, Boiling Springs. Rev. Carolyn S. DeStephano will officiate. Viewing will be on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services. A time of fellowship will immediately follow the services at the church. Entombment with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in the Rolling Green Cemetery Mausoleum, Camp Hill at 2 p.m. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements.
