Obituary

Master Sergeant (Ret) Willis W. "Doc" Halliday, Jr., US Army, age 78, of Carlisle, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at his home. He was born on Friday, July 15, 1932, in Troy, NY, a son of the late Willis W. and Clara (Angus) Halliday.

Willis graduated from Troy High School, Troy, NY. He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Doc retired from the United States Army in 1969 as a Master Sergeant and was awarded many honors and medals for his service to his country. After retiring from the Army, Doc served as an officer with the Carlisle Police Department for several years and then retired from the New Cumberland Army Depot after more than ten years of service. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie 1299, American Legion Post 101, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 761, White Circle Club and a life member of V.F.W. Post 477, all of Carlisle.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Ruth M. (Bartlow) Halliday, four sons; Col. (Ret) Alan W. Halliday, M.D., US Army (and his wife, Ann) of San Antonio, TX, Sgt. Major (Ret) William E. Halliday, USMC (and his wife, Eileen) of North Carolina, Glenn W. Halliday of Carlisle and Pastor Mark S. Halliday (and his wife, Sue) of Roaring Springs, a brother, Paul Halliday of Ohio, a sister, Fay Olszowy of Riverside, CA, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers; Richard and James Halliday and sister, Susan Marhafer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor Mark S. Halliday officiating. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
