LTC (Ret) Donald L. Zechman, US Army, 80, of Carlisle, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at his son's home in Carlisle. He was born on July 26, 1933, in Mifflinburg, a son of the late Charles E. and Florence (Snyder) Zechman.
Don attended Mifflinburg High School, The American University, Harrisburg Area Community College along with many other military training courses. Don always enjoyed working, he was a clerk in a general grocery store, a Fuller Brush representative, a machine operator with the Watsontown Cabinet Division of Philco Co. and co-owned with his brother, the D & H Zechman Beer Distributors in Mifflinburg. However, Don's passion was serving his country through the US Army and the PA National Guard. He served in the active Army during the Korean War and the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged and retired in 1993 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Don's last job was working at the New Cumberland Army Depot from 1980 until his retirement. He attended the Bethany Evangelical Church, Carlisle. Don will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Betty J. (Dieffenderfer) Zechman, daughters; Kathy Keiser of West Chazy, NY and Barbara M. (husband, Kevin) Sheriff of Carlisle, one son, Dirk L. (wife, Chris) Zechman of Carlisle, one stepson, James (wife, Margaret) Brown of Mifflinburg, two brothers; Richard Zechman and Robert (wife, Ruth) Zechman, both of Lewisburg, one sister, Betty Auman of Beaver Falls, 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by brothers; Kenneth, Harold and Charles Zechman, Jr. and sisters; Geraldine Shively and Thelma Zechman.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor Paul Dunbar officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Cumberland County Honor Guard will perform military honors immediately following the services at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in West Milton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Evangelical Church or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
