Obituary

The most famous chocolate chip cookie maker in the world passed away peacefully of natural causes on September 28, 2024.  On September 27, she went to her favorite hair salon as was her custom on every Friday and entertained family on Saturday. She did not suffer and was as sharp as ever to the last day.

Louise Davis Broujos, formerly of Carlisle and now Highland Park in Pittsburgh, was born on May 1, 1927, in Bentleyville, PA just outside of Pittsburgh, which is why she was the most fervent Steelers and Pitt sports fan you can imagine. She attended Bentleyville High School, where, to many people's surprise, she was a cheerleader. She attended California University for her undergraduate degree and was most proud of her master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She met the love of her life, Colonel John H. Broujos (US Marine Corps) at a debate match where she was coaching California's team, and her future husband was coaching the team at Dickinson College. Truth be told, John's team won the debate but that was the last argument that he ever won with her. They settled in Carlisle, PA, where John had a law practice and eventually a seat in the PA House of Representatives. Most people know that if it was not for Louise passing out her chocolate chip cookies at campaign rallies, the other guy may have won the election.

Louise was a lifelong educator, teaching English at Dickinson College and then as a substitute teacher in the Carlisle Area School District for many years. A voracious reader (and stickler for complete sentences), she burned through books quicker than Guy Montag (google it). As a substitute, she did not just babysit: you learned much when she was the sub. Incredibly active with her literary club, Fortnightly, various charities, and with her beloved Saint John's Episcopal Church, she constantly wanted to help the less fortunate. Her kindness and charity are legendary. As the wife of a Marine who fought in Korea and Vietnam, she took on the task of raising her children while her husband was fighting for his country, and she did it while working to support the family. Her husband was awarded the Silver Star, but he always said that his wife and other military wives should have received their own medals.

Later in life, as her husband suffered from dementia, most likely from effects of his military service, she was once again called to duty to care for him during his decline. Louise's children were fortunate enough to see how to act unselfishly to help your fellow man and your family by watching her do so without complaints or fanfare. Melanie Sprenkel (David), Nicholas (Fiona Conway), Gregory (Deanna Pellicci) and Elizabeth Graham (Doug) were all college athletes, not due to Louise's athletic prowess (she didn't exercise a day in her life), but because of her constant support and encouragement. She loved going to all of their sporting matches (except wrestling, which she thought was barbaric) and would dole out once again her chocolate chip cookies to her children's teammates. Louise could have easily opened a restaurant, as her cooking skills were as sharp as her tongue. She fed most of Carlisle, and subsequently Western Pennsylvania.

She is survived by her four children, 17 adoring grandchildren who will miss their "Situ", and many nieces and nephews, including the Abdow family who were constantly by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nassema and Michael Davis, sister, Calema Abdow, and brothers Edward Davis, Ralph Davis, and Michael Davis.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 11 from 4:30 to 7:00 at Ewing Brothers Funeral Home in Carlisle, with a funeral service at Saint John's Episcopal Church, On The Square, Carlisle, PA, at 11:00 on Saturday, October 12.  The burial will be in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated at her church in Pittsburgh, Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, 600 Pitt Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15221.  www.EwingBrothers.com.
