Al graduated in 1938 from Blain Vocational School, was a 1940 graduate of Central Penn Business College and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Dickinson College in 1948. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 and was a veteran of WWII. Al retired from the Carlisle Barracks where he served as the Director of Personnel and Community Activities with the Deputy Post Commandant from 1949 to 1979. After his retirement, he worked as a "tipstaff" at the Cumberland County Courthouse for more than 29 years. He was a faithful member of the First United Church of Christ, Carlisle, where he served in many capacities including; Elder, past President of Consistory, former Superintendent of Sunday School, former member of the choir and various councils. Al was a past Master and past Treasurer of St. John's Lodge No. 260 F & AM, a past District Deputy Grand Master of Third Masonic District, past Thrice Potent Master of Lodge of Perfection, Valley of Harrisburg, Scottish Rite, past President of Carlisle Chapter, National Sojourners, past Commander of Charles E. Lukens Camp, Heroes of'76, member of all Bodies of York Rite, Carlisle and was coroneted a 33rd Degree Mason in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1986. He was also a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and was the Secretary and past Commander of J. P. Brindle Camp No. 50, Carlisle, past Commander of PA Dept., Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, past President and Secretary, past Commanders and past Presidents of PA. Al was a past President of Carlisle Lions Club, past member of Carlisle Kiwanis Club, served on Committees at Dickinson College, coached Buddy League Baseball and played on baseball teams in the Army Air Corps and Dickinson College.
He is survived by one daughter, Cheryl A. (and her husband, Sal) Carrera of North Ft. Myers, FL, one son, Craig A. (and his wife, Dolly Rice) Kern of Carlisle, one brother, Gary W. (and his wife, Judy) Kern of Carlisle, one sister, Betty Baker of Carlisle, one grandson, Tony Carrera and many nieces and nephews. Al was predeceased by one sister, Lois Talley.
A viewing will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016 followed by funeral services at 4:00 p.m. in the First United Church of Christ, 30 N. Pitt St, Carlisle, with Rev. Chris Schwab and Rev. Rachel Schwab officiating. A Masonic service will begin at 3:50 p.m. A time of fellowship will immediately follow the services at the church. Burial will be private. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations in Al's name may be made to his church or to St. John's Lodge No. 260 in care of J.
