Obituary

Leonard Granville Doran, 88, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully after a short illness on April 5th, 2010 at Thornwald Home. He was born on April 13, 1921, in New Bedford, MA, a son of the late Ralph and Marion (Hicks) Doran. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy, also of Thornwald Home. He is also survived by his children; Jeff of Nova Scotia, Canada, Christopher (and wife, Ann Burnett) of New Cumberland, Hugh (and wife, Marcia) of Olalla, WA, Lisa Taulbee (and husband, Dan) of Lexington, KY and Kirk of Carlisle, and five grandchildren; Lucas of Nova Scotia, Amelia of British Columbia, Katie-Rose of Lexington, and Ryland and Noah, of Olalla; and one sister, Carolyn Chace of Hopkinton, MA.

Leonard graduated from Harvard University in 1942 and received a master's degree from George Washington University in 1949. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy with PT boat squadron 23 in the Pacific. With a 40-year career in public relations, his most recent positions were as President of the Greater Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce in 1980, and as Executive Director of Communications and Development at Dickinson College from 1973 until his retirement in 1984.

A talented and creative artist, Leonard leaves behind many treasured examples of his paintings, carvings, and photographs. His boundless joy for life included the love of literature, music, nature and above all, the deep and abiding love for his wife and family.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for the loving care and many kindnesses the entire staff at Thornwald provided for Leonard over the last four years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Thornwald Home, 442 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle, PA, 17013.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of the arrangements.
