Obituary

Lawrence B. Massey, 87, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Holy Spirit Hospital. He was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Loray, NC, and was a son of the late George F. and Jettie (Woodside) Massey.

Larry attended the Cool Springs High School in Statesville, NC and was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. Larry was onboard the USS LST 213 and the USS Bairoko. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. Larry retired in 1987 from the US Postal Service in Carlisle after 32 years of service. Larry along with his brother, James, co-founded Massey's Frozen Custard in Carlisle. Prior to entering the Navy, Larry worked for the former Beck's Frozen Custard Co. in Washington, D.C. Larry was an avid golfer and founded the US Postal Service Carlisle Golf Tournament. He formerly raced power boats at the Harrisburg Kipona. Larry also worked at the Washington Redskin's training camp in Carlisle for several years. After his retirement from the Postal Service, Larry worked at the Cumberland Golf Club, Mayapple Golf Course, spent the winter months working for the Tomoka Oaks Country Club in Ormond Beach, FL and at the Daytona International Speedway. Larry was immortalized in the Ripley's Believe It or Not by accidentally catching a seagull and a shark on the same cast.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Doris (Mentzer) Massey, one son, Larry B. Massey, II of Carlisle, two daughters, Brenda Massey Snyder (and husband, Nathan) of San Diego, CA, Cindy Massey Gardner (and husband, Michael) of Carlisle, five grandchildren; Tanya Keller, Britany Massey, Michael Gardner, Zachary Gardner and Amanda Snyder, three great-grandchildren; Allison Keller, Mark Gardner and Mya Gardner and several nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by one son, Kirk A. Massey, two brothers; Ed and James Massey and three sisters; Kathleen Rumple, Jessie Forsythe and Mary Gwyn Hoover.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Richard Forsythe officiating. Burial with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in LeTort Cemetery, Carlisle. A viewing will be held on Friday from 6 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
