Karl L. Railing, 78, of Carlisle, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, in his home. He was born on Wednesday, September 9, 1931, in Carlisle, a son of the late Lee and Edith (Wagner) Railing. He was widowed from Julia (DeWalt) Railing, who died Jan. 13, 1994 and was also preceded in death by his former wife, Dora (Yingst) Railing.
Karl graduated from Carlisle High School and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was wounded-in-action on July 9, 1953 near "Pork Chop Hill" in North Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart. Karl retired from the former United Telephone Co. after 20 years of service as a lineman and also had worked for the former Reeves-Hoffman Co. both of Carlisle. He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 101 and a life member of V.F.W. Post 477, all of Carlisle. He was also a member of AARP and a former member of Carlisle Fish & Game Association. Karl was an avid Phillies fan, enjoyed hunting, motorcycles and airplanes.
He is survived by a son, Michael L. Railing (and his companion, Karen Weikel) of Carlisle, two daughters; Linda S. Stamey (and her companion, Alan Flick) of Boiling Springs and Brenda K. (and her husband, Douglas) Bradley of Mt. Holly Springs, a brother, Glenn Railing of Carlisle, two sisters; Verna Shafer and Joyce Warner both of Carlisle, two step-daughters; Sheree McCleary and Deb Wiser, a step-son, Terry Throne, seven grandchildren; Tawnya, Brian and Jeremy Railing, Eric, Matthew and Emma Stamey and Amanda Bradley, several step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Dr. Robert Seibold and Rev. Timothy Sadler officiating. Burial with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Louther St., Carlisle, or to The Salvation Army, 20 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
