Obituary

Juan C. ("Juanqui") Ramos, 49, of Carlisle, PA died on Wednesday, June 28th, surrounded by loved ones at his side at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center – Montefiore in Pittsburgh, PA resulting from complications following a liver transplant.  He was born on October 8, 1973, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, and was the son of the late Carlos N. and Carmen L. (Reyes) Ramos.

Juan graduated from Carlisle High School with the Class of 1992.  He eventually started working as a Youth Counselor at the Herbert Schaffner Juvenile Detention Center in Steelton, PA for more than ten years, where he felt fulfilled knowing he was making a positive impact in the lives of troubled youth.  He then had an opportunity to explore a new field and launched a commercial and residential security alarm installation business, as well as entered the Bail Bonds industry.  Juan always had an entrepreneurial spirit coupled with a strong work ethic, and when the opportunity presented itself to establish a new franchise business, he also acquired a Coverall Commercial Cleaning Services franchise which he grew successfully throughout South Central Pennsylvania.  As his many businesses serviced the surrounding communities, this allowed Juan to cultivate, foster, and amass a wealth of business contacts and friends.  One of his more recent accomplishments was becoming an ordained minister, so he could preside over the weddings of his friends, members of his community, and this showered him with considerable joy.  In his spare time, Juan enjoyed traveling internationally and across the United States viewing travel as his most genuine form of education.  He also enjoyed hunting, camping, off-road adventures, but most importantly, he devoted considerable time supporting and loving his two cherished daughters. He was overjoyed when Janelle became the first in their immediate family to pursue university studies and graduated with a nursing degree from Bloomsburg University of PA.  She is an ER and ICU traveling nurse.  Janelle took a leave of absence as Juan's health started to decline and accompanied him to every medical appointment in Carlisle, Hershey and ultimately in Pittsburgh. It was she who helped filter the overwhelming amount of medical information to ensure he could make sound decisions about his health; she was his foremost medical advocate.  He was also very proud when his youngest, Mikayla was recruited to attend Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC to play Lacrosse.  She has developed a reputation for her veracity and her abilities as a leader on the field, as well as excelling academically where she is pursuing her degree in Environmental Sciences.  Her passion for creating better and more sustainable communities are goals for which Juan is most proud of her ambitions.  He especially loved attending their rugby and lacrosse matches and practices no matter where he had to travel.  Juan was a larger-than-life individual who lit up every room he entered; known and loved by all and he was their greatest form of entertainment.  He was also a member of The Carlisle Club and The Eagles Clubs in Carlisle.  Although his journey on this earth was cut short, he lived a life truly fulfilled and without regrets; a life many would envy.

Juan is survived by his companion (Laura MacDougall), former wife (Jennifer Hockensmith Ramos), his two daughters Janelle George (companion James Mellen) and Mikayla of Carlisle, PA; his brothers Carlos (Amanda) and José, both of Carlisle, PA, and Eduardo (Renée) of Doylestown, PA; his nephews and nieces:  Priscilla, Tristan, Lindsay, Roberto; and Isabella; his French Bulldog puppy, Chunky Nuggs; as well as more than twenty-five (25) first cousins, aunts and uncles.  He is preceded in death by his parents Carlos and Carmen Ramos, his maternal grandparents, Roman and Mérida (Torres), and his paternal grandparents Jesús and Dolores Ramos.

The family will hold a celebration of life later this summer, and details will be shared once finalized.  Burial services will be private.  Juan's passing leaves his youngest, Mikayla with the challenge of funding the costs of her university education, as she enters her Senior year this fall.  Anyone wishing to make a contribution to support Mikayla may do so by sending any gift to her mother, Jennifer Hockensmith Ramos, made payable to: Mikayla Ramos.  In the Memo section, please state, "Mikayla College Fund", and mail to:  1341 Kiner Boulevard, Carlisle, PA  17015.
