Obituary

John Henry Hippensteel, 87, of Carlisle, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2013, at his home. He was born April 16, 1926, in Shippensburg, a son of the late Harry David Hippensteel and Emily May (Bolan) Hippensteel.

John was a US Army veteran of WWII and was awarded several medals for his service. He received his G.E.D. after his military service and graduated from the former Carlisle Commercial College. John retired as a Vice-President of Valk Manufacturing in New Kingstown after many years of serviceand had also worked at the former C. H. Masland & Sons, Carlisle. He was a member of Wesleyan Church of The Cross, Carlisle. John had many interests throughout his life. He was the leader of "The Blue Ridge Boys", was on WHYL Radio and WLBR-TV and loved country music. He received his pilot's license in the 1970's. He enjoyed flying, traveling, teaching Sunday school, motorcycles and fast cars. He was a past member of the "Carlisle Flying Club". John will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Shirley M. (Drawbaugh) Hippensteel, one son, John D. (and his wife, Kathy) Hippensteel of Newville, three daughters; Leslie A. (and her husband, Charles) Burchfield of Carlisle, Carolyn L. (and her husband, Stephen) Acker of Middletown and Lisa S. (and her husband, John) Mayberry of Carlisle, one sister, Martha Henegar of Palmyra, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by three brothers; Elmer, Carl and Leroy and two sisters; Edna and Marjorie.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Daniel Mikesell officiating. Burial will be in Upper Frankford Brick Church Cemetery, Upper Frankford Twp. A viewing will be held on Monday from 12:00 noon until time of services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Wesleyan Church of The Cross, 430 "B" St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
