Obituary

John H. "Jack" Griffith, III, P. E., age 81, of Carlisle passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023, at Select Care Hospital, Harrisburg.  He was born Nov. 8, 1942, in Baltimore to the late John H. and Camille (McHugh) Griffith, Jr.

Jack grew up in York, until the age of ten, when his family moved to their family estate on Cactus Hill in Carlisle.  He attended St. Patrick Catholic School. Jack was a 1960 graduate of Carlisle High School.  He entered the Air Force in June of 1960.  He was stationed at George Air Force Base in California and went on assignment to Spain every six months as a radar technician.  When he completed his duty, he returned to Carlisle and entered Penn State University, and attended Harrisburg and York campus.  He graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Technology with a major in Electrical Design & Engineering.  He later obtained his P.E. in 1975.

Jack worked for Westinghouse in Maryland; Glasgow Burrell Hannemann and other firms before he went to work for Bill Snyder, of Carlisle.  He worked for Bill, eventually obtaining the business on his own.  His favorite saying was "40 jobs a year for 40 years".  He retired in 2017. He was past president of the Lions Club; involved in St. Patrick Church Building Committee, involved in Carlisle Swimming; he was a Scout Master with St. Pat's Troop 168 for many years and was involved in various church activities. He was a member of St. Patrick Church for 70 years.

In Sept. 1966, he married the former Joy Wilson.  They were married 51 years until her passing in 2017.  They had three sons, Steven A. (wife Tracy) of Shippensburg, David A. (wife Lynn) of Reading and Brian J. (wife Amy) of Manchester, MD; ten grandchildren, Lindsy J., Drew W., Zachary D., William M., Nicholas J.; Camille A., Joshua G., Veronica J., Tyler J., and Jacob E. Griffith and two great-grandchildren, Claire Barlow, and Grace Griffith.

Jack married the former Kristine "Kriss" Higgins-Martin on Oct. 13, 2018.

He is survived by sisters, Jean Griffith and Betsy White, his sisters-in-law, Kathy Griffith and Sally Griffith.  In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his sisters, Nancy Crowder and Mary Lou Bricker; brothers James, Gregory, and Michael.

A viewing will be held at Ewing Brothers Funeral Home on Thursday, December 21, 2023, from 1 to 5 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle with Rev. Donald Bender officiating. There will also be a viewing on Friday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of the Mass.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Third Century Fund, 152 E.
