John Robert Gregor, 93, died peacefully on December 11, 2018 at Claremont Nursing Home in Carlisle. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, a son of the late Annie (Malcolm) and Robert MacKay Gregor, and was married to the late Barbara (Whittaker) Gregor. He is survived by his three children: Judith L. Shiffler of Carlisle, John G. (wife Wendy) Gregor of Vineland, NJ and Donna G. (husband William) Whitesel of Roswell, GA. He was preceded in death by twin brothers, Harold L. and Norman L. Gregor, and son-in-law, Bruce M. Shiffler.
John was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps. A 1949 graduate of Michigan State University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, John entered his lifelong affiliation with the grinding wheel industry which began in Michigan. In 1962, he moved his family to Carlisle to run the Carlisle Hot Pressed Wheel Company, later known as SL Industries. John's legacy influenced many aspects of the Carlisle Community: performing arts, science, local government, music, church, health care and civic organizations. He was president of the board of Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet as well as a performer in many ballets for 27 years. John served as a Carlisle Borough Councilman and he was a member of the Elks. An accomplished tenor, John sang with the Carlindian Chorus and several Barbershop quartets as well as his church choir at St. John's Episcopal church. There he served on the vestry, priest search committees, and as diocesan finance chairman. As President of the Carlisle Hospital board, John was influential in the building of the current hospital. In addition to community service, he was an avid Civil War history buff, a jogger, golfer, pilot and a Detroit Tigers baseball fan. He was a beloved grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. His family will miss his kindness, humor and tenor voice.
A memorial service will be held January 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church On the Square, Carlisle. Rev. Adam Kradel will be officiating. A time of fellowship will follow the service. In addition, a private internment will take place in the columbarium of the Good Shepherd at the church.
