John A. Cunningham, Sr., 83, of Carlisle, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at West Shore Hospital, Mechanicsburg. He was born on May 22, 1933 in Sparrows Point, MD, and was a son of the late Ira James Cunningham and Ida Mae (Braun) Cunningham.
John attended Sparrows Point Senior High School and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked for the Bethlehem Steel Co. for 17 years and was the owner-operator of both the D & J Bus Line and D & J Trucking for 20 years, all of Sparrows Point. After retiring and coming to Carlisle in 1984, John worked for Adam Wholesaler, Carlisle and retired again after 10 years of service with the U. S. Army War College, where he served as a driver in the transportation department. He was a member of the Newville Assembly of God. John loved to restore antique cars, and enjoyed working on anything mechanical and could fix just about anything. He loved the outdoors, feeding the deer at his home and gardening.
He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 64 years, Patricia Ann (Burns) Cunningham, two daughters; Deborah L. (John Dick) Ryan of West York and Kathleen L. (William) Bailone of New Freedom, two sons; John A. (Saundra) Cunningham, Jr. of Newville and David W. Cunningham of Glen Rock, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one grandson, David Nolan, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Jeffrey Kettering officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle, with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard. Viewings will be held on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Visit www.Since1853.com to send condolences.
