John B. "Jack" Carroll, 93, of Potomac, Md., died on Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born May 7, 1918, in Carlisle, Jack was the son of the late John and Louise Bentz Carroll of Carlisle, and brother of the late William Carroll.

He attended Carlisle High School, Millard Prep School, Dickinson College and Harvard Business School. During World War II, Jack served as a first lieutenant in the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) of the U.S. Army and was in the second wave to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his valor. A retired executive VP of the Glass Packaging Institute and former president of the Closure Manufacturers Association, Jack authored three books, was a prolific painter and avid world traveler. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and local chapters of the VFW and American Legion.
Jack was married 53 years to the late, Mary Mallory Carroll.

He is survived by two daughters, Molly Mains and Barbara Peterson; four grandchildren, Mallory, Tyler, Gregory and Melinda; and three great-grandchildren, Kerris, Thayer and Bexley.

Private funeral services will be held in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, with Rev. Dr. Mark A. Scheneman officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
