John H. Byer, 88, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully in the Swaim Health Center at Green Ridge Village in Newville on Monday, January 25, 2010. He was born on Wednesday, March 16, 1921 in Parkersburg, WV and was a son of the late John C. and Leila (Howard) Byer. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Shirley A. (Painter) Byer, who died in December 13, 2003 and his sister, Helen Byer.

John was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School in Wilkinsburg, and was retired after 40 years of service as an engineer at the former Westinghouse Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle and was a 32nd degree Mason, having recently earned his 50-year pin.

John is survived by his daughter, Dr. Linda (and her husband, Dr. John) Lemmon of Carlisle, his son, Robert J. (and his wife, Nikki) Byer of Etters, his brother, Jim Byer of Pittsburgh, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the Penn Lincoln Memorial Park Chapel in North Huntingdon, with Rev. Clarence Hoener officiating. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements.
