Obituary

John H. Broujos, 87, of Carlisle and Pittsburgh died on Friday, July 8, 2016 at his daughter Melanie's home in Pittsburgh, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 12, 1929 in Wilmington, DE, a son of the late Nicholas Michael Broujos and Jenny (Pavoni) Broujos.


John graduated from the H. C. Conrad High School in Wilmington, DE, earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware and his law degree from the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle. John served in the United States Marine Corps and the Reserves for 37 years and retired with the rank of Colonel. He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In the Korean War, John was the Rifle Platoon Commander, Dog Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment and was awarded the Silver Star (our nation's third highest combat decoration) and Purple Heart medals. John served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 as Executive Officer, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, G-2 of the 9th Brigade. In 1968, John was an instructor at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and authored the lesson plan for Riverine Warfare. He practiced as an attorney for more than 50 years with Broujos & Gilroy in Carlisle. He served as a Democratic Member of the PA House of Representatives from 1983 to 1992. John was a faithful member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Carlisle and was also a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wilkinsburg, the Cumberland County Bar Association, PA Bar Assoc., American Bar Assoc., Founder and Chair of the PA House of Representatives bi-partisan Acid Rain Caucus, and was a Sponsor of the Wider Horizons Program for Catholic and Irish youth education and training. He was the Solicitor for Cumberland County, a 30 plus year Democratic Committeeman, and was an agricultural advisor to former Governor Robert Casey.


He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Louise (Davis) Broujos, four children; Melanie Sprenkel of Pittsburgh (husband David, children; Bella, Charles, John, Gregg, and Maria), Nicholas Broujos of Sligo, Ireland (wife Fiona Conway, children; Ciara and Colin), Gregory Broujos of Pittsburgh, (wife Deanna Pellicci, children; Zachary and Nicholas), and Lisa Graham of Pittsburgh (husband Douglas, children; Nassema, Douglas, Calema, David, Abraham, Isaac, Leila and Jacob); and one brother, Michael of Wilmington, DE. John was predeceased by one brother, Frank Broujos.


A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 followed by the Requiem Eucharist at 11:00 a.m. in the St. John's Episcopal Church, On the Square, Carlisle, with Rev. David Bateman and Rev. Nancy Chalfant-Walker officiating. Burial with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle. A fellowship reception will be held at the church immediately following the burial. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle is in charge of the arrangements.
