Obituary

Joan I. Wagner, 86, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Mercy House Hospice in Chambersburg. She was born in Karns City, Butler County on October 27, 1939, to the late Karl  Rottman and Dorothy (Hazlett) Rottman. She was the widow of the late James E. Wagner who died on November 4, 2025. Joan was a devoted servant of Christ, a loving mother and a loving wife for 66 years to her husband. She was a longtime member of Carlisle First Church of God.

Joan graduated from Karns City High School. She spent many of her working years as a salesperson for Zayre in Butler and JC Penny in Carlisle. She was an avid and talented artist who enjoyed working with acrylics and watercolors and liked to exhibit her work. She was past president of the Butler Art association and past member of the Carlisle Art Association. Joan also enjoyed assisting her husband James in the antique car clubs they belonged to, showing their cars and writing and publishing for the various car club newsletters.

Joan is survived by a daughter Susan (her husband Dave) Wickard, a son Mark (his wife Jodi) Wagner, seven granddaughters, Amber (her husband William) Depew, Aleah Wickard, Hannah Wickard, Haileigh Wickard, Brittany (her husband Heath) Ausherman, Brooklyn (her husband Brady) Weaver, and Erin Wagner (her companion Brent McCracken), one grandson Sage (his wife Ali) Wagner, two great grandsons, Asher Depew and Landon Depew, two sisters, Sylvia Debus and  Helen Snow, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son James E. Wagner Jr., one sister Donna Watts, and one brother Karl Rottman Jr.

A memorial service will be held at Carlisle First Church of God, 705 Glendale St. Carlisle, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Mike Poe officiating. A visitation will take place from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will follow the service in the social hall.

There will be a private burial for the family at Fort Indiantown Gap at a later date.
