Joan Lay (McGowan) Kuntz, 79, of Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at Chapel Pointe in Carlisle. She was born on October 2, 1940 in Upper Mifflin Twp. and was a daughter of the late Walter James McGowan and Mary Ruth (Lay) McGowan.
Joan graduated from Big Spring High School with the class of 1958 and earned her LPN degree in 1959 from the Carlisle Hospital School of Practical Nursing. She was named LPN of the year in 1999 at Carlisle Hospital. Joan retired in 2006 from Carlisle Regional Medical Center. After retirement, Joan worked for Visiting Angels until 2014. Joan touched the lives of many people as a nurse and elderly caregiver with her kind and generous ways and contagious smile. Joan enjoyed working in the yard, spending family vacations at Rehoboth Beach, outlet shopping with friends and bird watching. She attended Carlisle First Church of God.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Cornelius F. Kuntz, Jr., her children; Keith and wife, Pat Kuntz of Newville, Karen and husband, John Bueche of Avon Lake, OH and Kathy Weigle of Newville and her companion, Don Ward, one sister, Doris Robinson of Carlisle and one brother, John McGowan of Shippensburg; grandchildren Tabatha Weigle, Chase Weigle, Jeffrey Kuntz, Jared Kuntz and Gwendolyn Bueche; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sister, Ruth Coyle and brother, Paul McGowan.
A visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2020 followed by funeral services at 1:30 p.m. in the Carlisle First Church of God, 705 Glendale St., Carlisle, PA 17013 with Pastor R. Bruce Henneman officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joan's name may be made to the church or a charity of your choice. Visit www.EwingBrothers.com to send condolences.
