Jeanne G. Kelly, 90, of Carlisle, died on August 21 in the Pinnacle Health West Shore Hospital. She was born on February 3, 1926 in Cincinnati, Ohio and was the daughter of the late George Garties and Irma (Sprang) Garties. She attended Mount St. Joseph-on-the-Ohio College and the University of Cincinnati, where she graduated in 1948 with a B.A. in English Literature, focusing on the works of Shakespeare.
Jeanne was introduced to her future husband, Joseph Kelly, by her college roommate, who was Joe's sister. After they married in 1949 Joe joined the Army. As an Army wife, Jeanne raised a family as they moved around the world, including postings in Germany and Korea. Moving a family of six young boys and a dog every few years was quite an undertaking, but Jeanne was able to accomplish the task with a minimum of chaos.
Jeanne loved the outdoors, and was an avid tennis player, skier and horseback-rider. After settling in Carlisle in 1969, Jeanne explored local state parks and especially enjoyed family hiking and camping trips to Pine Grove Furnace, Kings Gap and Pinchot Park. She was actively involved in local community affairs, and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Cumberland-Perry Association of Retarded Citizens (CPARC).
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph, and two brothers, Richard and James. She is survived by her six sons, Douglas Kelly of Arlington, VA; Lawrence Kelly of Front Royal, VA; Jeffrey Kelly of Carlisle; Bruce Kelly of Newville; Paul Kelly of Boiling Springs; and Kit Kelly of Chico, CA; 4 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 29 at 11:00 AM in the St. Patrick Shrine Church, 140 East Pomfret Street, Carlisle with the Rev. Don Bender officiating. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Visitation will precede the Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Shrine Church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
