Chaplain Major (Ret) Jay R. Sherwood, III, USAF, 79, formerly of Florida, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carlisle. He was born on December 10, 1945, in Anchorage, Alaska and was a son of the late Jay R. Sherwood, II and Patricia (Cross) Sherwood. He was married to the late Linda M. Sherwood.
Jay served in the U.S. Army (1968 - 1973) and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Jay served in the Air Force Reserve for nearly 12 years and entered into the active US Air Force in 1986 and retired in 1999 from military service with nearly 30 years of combined service and the rank of Major. He served as an Air Force Chaplain for more than 12 years. Major Sherwood earned many honors including, the National Defense Service Medal (Air Force) with one Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Service Medal (Army) with two Bronze Service Stars, Southwest Asia Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Kuwait Liberation Medal to name just a few.
He is survived by one son, Matthew (wife Mylene) Sherwood of Harrisburg, one daughter Kristina (husband Ferlain) Hoover of Steinhatchee, FL, two brothers, David Sherwood of Anacosta, WA and Kenneth Sherwood of Anchorage, AK, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and two adopted daughters.
A private burial will be in Tallahassee National Cemetery, FL. with military honors www.EwingBrothers.com.
