James Edwin "Jim" "Harp" Landis, 61, of Carlisle, devoted father, son and brother, died suddenly on Monday, March 22, 2010 at his home. He was born on Saturday, July 31, 1948, in Carlisle, a son of Martha "Marty" (Murphy) Landis of Carlisle and the late Millard W. "Bill" Landis.
Jim was a 1966 graduate of Carlisle High School, where he was on the varsity wrestling team. He graduated from Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado and received his Bachelors degree in Political Science from American University in Washington D.C. Jim served in Germany during the Vietnam War. He retired from the former Sprint Telephone Co., Carlisle after more than 25 years of service, where he was an installation and repair technician. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed cycling, hiking, traveling and spending time on the beach and in the mountains. He was a caring philanthropist, who gave his time helping others in the community, and dedicated his life to the politics of justice and equality. He was a faithful volunteer with the Carlisle C.A.R.E.S. organization. He was a member of Old Towne Run Mountain Lodge, Harrisburg Cycling Club and was a member of the Order of Arrow with the Boy Scouts of America.
In addition to his loving mother, Jim is survived by his daughter, Malieka Te' Landis of Reno, NV, a brother, Millard W. "Bill" (and his wife, Ginny) Landis of Pittsburgh, his nephews, Joshua Quaye William Landis and Christopher Quaye William (and his wife, Jennifer Gawlik) Landis, his aunts and uncles; Dick and Lois Landis and Tom and Donna Landis all of Carlisle and numerous cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Ann Flynn officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to Carlisle C.A.R.E.S., 50 W. Penn St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
