Jim led a remarkable life devoted to God, church, family, friends and community. He graduated from Dickinson College and served four years in the United States Navy. Jim earned his dentistry degree from Temple University establishing his Carlisle practice in 1950. Jim's passion for dentistry continued for over 59 years. Jim was a well- known community and Episcopal Church leader receiving numerous awards throughout his lifetime including Carlisle Area's Finest 1991 Award, Presiding Bishop's Award, Dickinson College Sports Hall Of Fame for 1941-1943 Football - Track, The Pennsylvania Sports Hall Of Fame Meritious Achievement Award, The Salvation Army Advisory Board Certificate of Life Membership, South Central Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame, Distinguished Alumnus Award Carlisle High School and the Molly Pitcher Award in 1997.
Jim was a Life Member of the St John's Episcopal Church Vestry, a Senior Warden under three rectors, usher, choir member and founding member of the Bishop White Legacy Society.
Jim still holds the Dickinson College record for the 100 yard dash, 9.9 seconds. He was co-captain elect for the 1943 football team earning two letters in football as a halfback. Jim was also an avid swimmer, golfer and occasional jogger. Jim also was a member of the Samaritan Fellowship, with a passion for serving and helping those in need. During his years in Carlisle he was formerly active in the YMCA, Carlisle Rotary, The Carlisle Hospital Medical Staff and numerous other community groups.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Wilma H. (Barkalow) Prescott, one son, Steve Prescott of Key West, FL, one daughter, Lisa Prescott of Carlisle, five grandchildren; Jason and Steven Prescott and James, Bennett and Corrin Ward, one sister-in-law, Doris Prescott, one brother-in-law, Ernest Zeger, both of Carlisle, one son-in-law, Richard Ward of Carlisle, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Zeger and one brother, Robert Prescott.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 25, 2012, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, On the Square, Carlisle, with Rev. Canon Mark A. Scheneman officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Chapel of the Good Shepherd Columbarium. Visitation and fellowship will immediately follow the service in the church parish hall. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to Samaritan Fellowship, P.O. Box 495, Carlisle or to St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 612, Carlisle, PA 17013.
