James K. Adams, 86, of Jupiter, Florida, died June 3 at his farm in Carlisle. He was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Carlisle to Kenneth McConnell Adams and Hazel Blanche (Fickel) Adams.
He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII and in 1948 he married Arlene L. Fuller. Jim held a variety of jobs in the transportation and logistics industry as he began his career. In 1961, he founded Dauphin Terminals and subsequently Dauphin Distribution Services, Fostoria Distribution Services, Transolidate Plus, and several other warehouse-related companies. He served as founder, chairman, president and CEO and was a pioneer and leader in establishing and developing the logistics industry in Central Pennsylvania. He was a charter member of the Harrisburg Traffic Club.
Following retirement and relocation to Jupiter, Florida, he served as President of the Jonathan's Landing Property Owners' Association and Commodore of the Jonathan's Landing Yacht Club. Jim was a lifelong antique car collector, a 50 plus year member of the Hershey Region Antique Car Club, Gettysburg Region AACA, and a nationally-known collector of Packards, brass-era cars, and classic vehicles from the 1920s through the 1960s. He and Arlene established the James K. and Arlene L. Adams Foundation, a scholarship fund which has and continues to provide financial assistance to college students since 1993.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife, he is survived by one son, James II and wife Jane, daughter, Dr. Kathy and husband Ken Purcell, two sisters, Barbara Brehm and Elizabeth Adams, grandchildren: James III, Lindsay, and John Adams, Ali and Carrie Purcell and great-grandchildren: Jude and Caleb Adams and Laleh Almassian and countless friends who will miss him deeply.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle. Pastor David Willard will officiate. Immediately following the service, a time of fellowship will be held at the West Shore Country Club, 100 Brentwater Rd., Camp Hill. Burial will be privately held at the CALA-J Farm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the James K. and Arlene L. Adams Foundation, c/o David Radcliff, Esq., 1011 Mumma Rd., Ste. 201, Lemoyne, PA 17043.
