IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hal
Mcclure
January 30, 1952 – March 1, 2025
Hal McClure, 73, passed away at his home in Carlisle, PA, on March 1, 2025. His wife and daughter were at his side. Born January 30, 1952, in Porter Township outside Williamsport, PA, he was a son of George and Nellie Barr McClure.
Hal was a graduate of Williamsport High School Class of 1969 and Williamsport Area Community College. He received his bachelor degree in accounting from Bloomsburg State College in 1974 and his Master of Business Administration from Shippensburg State College. He was also a Certified Public Accountant. Hal worked in public accounting for Main Lafrentz and also in private industry for various companies as a Financial Controller. In 1989, he was part of the Carlisle Syntec team who participated in a joint venture with the then-Soviet Union to produce rubber roofing. Hal made numerous trips to Moscow and was there when the first McDonalds restaurant opened, with the line to enter stretching two city blocks. Hal retired as Chief Financial Officer for PACE Resources in York, PA.
Two of Hal's greatest joys in life were his daughter Laura and his twin grandsons, Matt and Dave. Hal was always actively engaged in their lives, teaching them to ski and to sail, to fish and to throw the football and baseball. He was so proud of their accomplishments.
Sailing and skiing were two of Hal's favorite hobbies. He loved to sail the Chesapeake Bay in his beloved 37 foot sailboat Scot Free, taking so much pride in keeping Scot Free in pristine condition. He and Cindy's biggest sailing adventure was taking Scot Free from the Chesapeake to Boston one summer, visiting many ports of call along the way. His second favorite hobby was skiing. He enjoyed skiing the local ski areas as well as skiing New England and the West.
Always willing to volunteer his time and talents, Hal was involved with many different organizations. In 2007-2008, he was Chair of the York County Chamber of Commerce. He served as treasurer for the New Birth of Freedom Council of the Boy Scouts, winning the Silver Beaver Award for his service. Hal was a Past Commander and long-time treasurer of the Susquehannock Sail and Power Squadron. He was a Past Commodore of the Chesapeake Bay Tartan Sailing Club, and he served on the finance committee of Maryland Yacht Club for seven years. Also, Hal served as a Past President of the Ski Roundtop Racing Club, as well as serving on local boards for the Red Cross and United Way. For a brief period before his illness, he was a member of Carlisle Sunrise Rotary.
Hal is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cynthia Pagana McClure. He is also survived by his daughter Laura McClure Rice and husband Ian and their twin grandsons Matthew and David Rice of Savoy, Illinois. Also surviving are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Susan and Howard Tomlinson of Jacksonville, FL, and three half-brothers, Ronald, Eugene, and Robert Guthrie, of the Williamsport area. Hal was predeceased by his parents, his brother Thomas McClure, his half brother Stanley Guthrie, and a half-sister Gloria Guthrie Goodwin.
Hal was a man of quiet strength, modest, honest in his dealings, a man of his word. People could count on Hal. He was also a clear-eyed realist, a hard worker, and a great role model. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
