Gordon Ivan Graves, 79, of Boiling Springs, passed over peacefully on Monday, February 6, 2012, at his homesurrounded by his wife and daughters. Born July 1, 1932, at Rose Manor in Bennington, Vermont, he was the son of the late Frederick Orison Graves, Jr. and Marian Ella Towsley Graves.
Gordon graduated from Carlisle High School in 1950. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956. During that time, he worked in the Field Operations arena of the USAF Security Service which was essentially the intelligence branch for the Air Force. For three years, he operated in the European Theatre with subsidiary responsibility for North Africa. He attended college at Shippensburg and Penn State Universities with a focus on finance and business management. In the mid-1970s he owned the former Bruster-Stearns Building and Greyhound Bus Station in Carlisle. He retired from IBM after 35 faithful years of service where he was an Information Asset Security Administrator. During that time, he started the IBM Employees Federal Credit Union in Mechanicsburg where he served as President and CEO. He then successfully transitioned the IBM branch into Americhoice Federal Credit Union. He served on the Board of Directors for Americhoice for 34 years. Few people knew that he was an ordained minister but his close friends would call him "Rev" or "Doc" for Reverend Doctor. He was a member of VFW Posts 8851 and 477, AMVETS Post 0274, Carlisle Elks Lodge 578, American Legion Post 109 and the Moose. He was a volunteer for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 13 years, Carolyn Graves and by his daughters, Jennifer L. (and husband, David) Bandura of Boiling Springs, and Victoria L. Graves of Mechanicsburg. Gordon is survived by four granddaughters, Alexandra L. Bandura, Jasmine Bailey, Danielle Bailey and Brittany (and husband Daryl) Hall. He has several step-children; Robin Morinho (and husband Rod), Denise Rodenhaber (and husband George) and Kelly Snare (and husband Randy). His step-grandchildren include Vanessa, Kristen, Cassandra, Ryan, Dylan, Jordyn and Mazey. He was preceded in death by his sister, Francis I. Hart and brothers, Frederick O. Graves III., and Donald E. Graves and by his grandson, Avery J. Bandura, of Boiling Springs.
All are welcome to attend a viewing on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, from 6 - 8:00 p.m.at Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle. Gordon will beentombedin the Graves family mausoleum in Bennington, Vermont at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, Gordon had requested that donations be made in memory of his grandson to the Avery J. Bandura Memorial Scholarship, c/o Americhoice Federal Credit Union, 2175 Bumble Bee Hollow Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
