Obituary

Gertrude Lyons, 85, of Carlisle, beloved wife and mother, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2012, at ManorCare Health Services, Carlisle. She was born on Sunday, February 13, 1927, in Vienna, Austria, a daughter of the late Franz and Hedwig (Staedler) Gruber.

Gertrude graduated from high school and business school in Vienna. As a teen, she lived through months of bombing by the American and British aircraft; she was once trapped under bombing rubble for eight hours. After WWII, she was a translator for the US Armed Forces. Gertrude was of Catholic faith. She enjoyed being a homemaker, mother, shopping, bargain hunting and watching game shows. She was also an avid reader.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of nearly 61 years, whom she married in Salzburg, Austria, CWO3 (U.S. Army Ret) Thomas L. Lyons, one son, Jeffrey T. (and his wife, Georgia) Lyons of Carlisle, one daughter, Sharon LeBlanc of Mechanicsburg, one sister, Elanore Baronyai (and husband, Karl) of Vienna, one grandson, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 13, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Dr., Carlisle, with Rev. William C. Forrey officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's New Catholic Cemetery, North Middleton Twp. A viewing will held on Thursday from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Army Emergency Relief, National HQS, 200 Stovall St., Alexandria, VA 22332-0600 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P. O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
