George F. Lupfer, 90, of Carlisle, PA passed away during a brief stay at Thornwald Nursing Home. The middle son of the late Alice (Sheaffer) and Casper F. Lupfer, George was born in Perry County and the family moved to Elm Street in Carlisle as a child.
After graduation from Carlisle High School in 1954, he served in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic and was stationed at Presque Isle AFB for most of his 4 years. Upon discharge, George returned home to Carlisle and worked at various automobile dealerships and garages. He married Barbara Martin in 1961 and in 1969, with two small children at home, he started Lupfer's Transmissions. He was still working at the ‘shop’ as recently as July 2026. As a small business owner, George supported several families over the years by employing at least eight mechanics, some of them for over a decade, including his father, son, and grandson.
George was a long-time member of Carlisle First Church of God. He had an affinity for Packards, old Chryslers, and El Caminos. George was an avid golfer, a South Mountain deer hunter, and fisherman. He enjoyed the challenge of a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle, and he also loved watching golf tournaments and basketball - even though he passionately believed that the referees had "lost the game."
George would tell stories of being a young caddy at the Carlisle Country Club which sparked his love for the game of golf. He was a member of the York County Amateur Golf Association (YCAGA) and represented Range End Country Club in numerous tournaments over the years. His accolades with YCAGA include: 1993 Men's Senior Champion, 1997 Man of the Year, and 2003 Hall of Fame inductee. He even secured four of those elusive "hole-in-one" shots over the years. George last played 18 holes at Range End in 2022 at 86.
George is survived by Barbara, his wife of 65 years, his brother Warren (Nancy) Lupfer, son Scott (Jeanne) Lupfer and daughter Michele (Michael) Willard, granddaughter Nichole (Jeffrey) Burton, grandson Collin (Madeline) Willard, step-grandchildren Christina (Patrick) Ryan and Raymond (Guilia) Burdge, great-grandchildren Jackson, Brynlee, and Aubrey Burton and Jordan Lupfer, and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother Harry Lupfer and grandson Brandon Lupfer.
Thanks for everything Dad. We'll meet up with you on the back 9 someday.
