Frank E. Mackey, 84, of Shermans Dale, peacefully passed away with his loving family by his side on Thursday, January 7, 2010, in his home. He was born on Monday, June 8, 1925, in Chambersburg, and was a son of the late Benjamin and Clara B. (Evans) Mackey and was widowed from Margaret G. (Dick) Mackey who died Sept. 26, 2003.
Frank was a US Army veteran of WWII and was awarded several medals for his service to our nation. He and his late wife formerly owned and operated "Mackey's Roller Rink and Tavern" in Carlisle for more than 25 years. He also had worked for the former Carlisle Shoe Co., Bethlehem Steel Mill and the Ritter Brothers. Frank was an entrepreneur and enjoyed buying and selling real estate, antique cars and also formerly leased out two tractor trailer rigs. He was a member of the Mechanicsburg Club, Mechanicsburg American Legion Post 109, the New Bloomfield VFW and was a 32nd degree mason with the Eureka Masonic Lodge in Mechanicsburg. Frank also enjoyed car shows. He was preceded in death by six brothers; Walter, Charles, Russell, Arthur, Raymond and Thomas Mackey and two sisters; Viola Kramer and Edna Heller.
He is survived by two sons; Terry Mackey and Dennis Mackey both of Carlisle, two daughters; Barbara (and her husband, Michael) Minich and Joyce (and her husband, Kenneth) Hair all of Shermans Dale, two sisters; Ruth Mackey Thumma and Helen Mackey both of Carlisle, one granddaughter, Shelby (and her husband, Jeffrey) Minich Nelson of Shermans Dale, one great-granddaughter, Mollee Nelson and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Richard Ruff officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held on Sunday from 2 - 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until time of the services.
