EN1 (SS) (Ret) George Hinda, Jr., US Navy, 92, of Carlisle, died peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at his daughter, Cheryl's home in Carlisle. He was born on Dec. 29, 1920, in Bridgeport, and was a son of the late George Hinda, Sr. and Mary (Silaygi) Hinda Ondic. George was married to the late Myrtle (Ludolff) Hinda, who died Oct. 23, 1999.
George graduated from South Hills High School in Pittsburgh and retired after 20 years of service with the United States Navy. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea. George's entire Navy service was on submarines and he was awarded numerous medals and honors. After retirement from the Navy, George was employed and retired after 23 years of service with the Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot. He was a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII - Capital Chapter, which merged into the Keystone Base United States Veterans, Inc. George formerly attended St. Matthias Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlisle.
He is survived by four daughters; Clairene Jones of Mechanicsburg, Georgieanne (and her husband, Dennis) Whitcomb of Duncannon, Suzanne (and her husband, Leonard) McAfee of Shermans Dale and Cheryl (and her husband, Emmett) Collins of Carlisle, a son-in-law, Scott Rice of Harrisburg, one brother, John Hinda of Pittsburgh, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. George also leaves behind his pet cat, "Tinker". He was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Rice, one brother, Joseph Hinda and two sisters; Sue Olszewski and Mary Dzadony.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor Gavin Whitcomb officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. A viewing will be held on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
