Doris Jean Whitzel, 80, of Carlisle, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at UPMC Carlisle.  She was born on August 6, 1943, in Newville and was a daughter of the late Howard W. Burkett and Fleta (Franklin) Burholder Burkett Jumper.

Doris graduated from Shippensburg High School with the Class of 1961.  She worked for the U-Wanna Wash Frock in Shippensburg, Carlisle Garment Factory, C & M Sportswear in Carlisle and retired after 28 years of service as a cook with George's Sub & Pizza Shop in Carlisle.  Doris formerly attended LeTort United Methodist Church, Carlisle.  She was a former member of Walnut Bottom Fire Co., Red Hat Fluffs and Council at LeTort United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years Robert E. Whitzel, one daughter Wendy (Robert) Stephens of Carlisle, stepdaughter Melinda (Johnnie) Rodriguez of Mechanicsburg, stepson Michael Whitzel of Dillsburg, one brother Daniel Burkett of Walnut Bottom, five sisters, Carol Carmack, Susan Shiveley, Donna Nickey and Betty Jones, all of Shippensburg and Frances McBride of Carlisle, one son-in-law Lonnie Vick of Carlisle, 2 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by one daughter Angie Vick, one grandson Seth Vick, two brothers, Lee Burkholder, and William Burkett and one sister Minnie Thomas.

A funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle with Rev. Richard Reese officiating.  The burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shippensburg.  A viewing will be held on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  www.EwingBrothers.com.
